On Sunday, June 26th, the Discovery Channel will televise the results of an online vote for the “Greatest American.”Because of the nature of the plurality voting system being used, however, the results may easily be unrepresentative of real public opinion.

In Virginia Primary, Lack of Majority Mandate

On June 14, fewer than 4% of Virginia’s registered voters turned out to vote in the primary to choose Republican and Democratic nominees for statewide offices and the state legislature. Three candidates didn’t even win a majority of the vote in their primary, including the Democrats’ nominee for lieutenant governor. As Virginia heads toward a November gubernatorial race with three candidates and uncertain turnout, it’s high time the state revisit its plurality voting rules.

GM shareholders nearly adopt proportional voting system

On June 7, the shareholders of one of the world’s largest corporations, General Motors, nearly voted to adopt proportional voting for future elections for the Board of Directors. Almost 49% of shareholders supported cumulative voting over the current winner-take-all system. The proposal for cumulative voting won the highest percentage of the vote of any non-board-recommended measure in GM history.

Presidential primary reform plan gathers momentum

The American Plan for scheduling presidential primaries received a boost this week when the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley voted to endorse the plan and recommend it to the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee for further action.

Dean - "Instant runoff voting brings more people in"

On June 3rd at the 2005 “Take Back America” Conference held in Washington D.C., Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean encouraged the adoption of instant runoff voting (IRV) as a way to assure majority winners and increase voter turnout. Said Dean, “I think we ought to have instant runoff voting. I think that brings people in to the polls. If there's a third party, fine. They get a choice. We get majorities that win, and it brings more people in.”
