U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced on August 24 that she will introduce a resolution to abolish the Electoral College and provide for the direct popular vote of the President. In a press release, Feinstein lamented the fact that "the current system enables a handful of states to become battleground states, and disenfranchises tens of millions of American voters."

More and more attention is being placed on how we elect our President as states begin to change their rules for awarding electoral votes. The National Popular Vote initiative is gaining momentum as a state-based approached to making every vote equal in presidential elections.

Feinstein made a similar call in 2004, noting that "The Electoral College is an anachronism and the time has come to bring our democracy into the 21st Century."
