Reformers Gather to 'Claim Democracy'

Hundreds of reformers from across the political spectrum and the nation gathered in Washington, D.C. on November 9-11 for FairVote's 2007 Claim Democracy Conference. Co-sponsored by a remarkable array of national and state reform and voting rights organizations, the conference marked the biggest such gathering in years.

More than 100 speakers addressed dozens of workshops, strategy sessions and plenaries, ranging from a "transpartisan dialogue" among conservative and liberal thinkers to hands-on sessions about advancing reform in Congress, state legislatures and cities in 2008-9. We held a day-long intensive training and strategy session for more than 60 backers of ranked choice voting methods representing dozens of states.

On Saturday night, some 250 FairVote backers came together for a memorable evening at our 15th-anniversary gala in historic Union Station. We paid special tribute to the lasting impact and tireless efforts of FairVote's board chair John B. Anderson. The audience also cheered the winners (and honorable mentions) of FairVote's recent Upgrade Democracy video contest.
