In November 2010, Oakland used ranked-choice voting in its election for mayor, as well as several city council seats. These fact sheets compare RCV with the previous system used to elect the mayor of Oakland: a June primary election followed by a November runoff between the top two candidates from the first fround. A thorough analysis of the numbers shows that RCV empowers voters, providing a significant improvement over the old system.
