Presidential Candidate Tracker - Oct. 29th Update
- Posted: October 29, 2008
- Categories: National Popular Vote, FairVote
In the eight weeks since the Republican convention, the major party candidates for president and vice-president have devoted 99% of their campaign visits to 17 states and 81% of their campaign visits to only ten states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia, Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. With the exception of New York, these ten most-visited states are heavily contested battleground states with relatively large populations. This stockpiling of campaign attention into a handful of states is a direct consequence of the current Electoral College system. That system is governed by state statutes that by 2012 may be replaced by the National Popular Vote plan for president where every vote will be of equal weight wherever it is cast.

As the presidential campaigns enter their final four weeks, it is clear that, just as in the 2004 presidential campaign, they are focusing their attention solely on a declining number of battleground states. The non-partisan organization FairVote is maintaining a daily tracker of visits to states by the four major party nominees since September 5, the first day after the Republican national convention. This data will be used to follow up FairVote's groundbreaking 2006 report Presidential Election Inequality about our nation's shrinking battleground in presidential elections.

The Senate Loses its Cool

In the grand scheme of history, allowing voters to directly elect U.S. Senators is a new, hip concept. Before the ratification of the 17th Amendment in 1913, senators were chosen by state legislatures, leaving only members of the House serving at the will of actual voters. Perennial presidential candidate Alan Keyes may oppose the amendment, but it would be something of a shock if this particular electoral fad - and important advance for democracy - did not endure.
