Rhode Island Youth Voter Advance Registration Waits for Governor's Signature

Last week the Rhode Island state legislature overwhelmingly passed a bill sponsored by Rep. Edwin R. Pacheco (HR 6215) that allows 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote, making them automatically eligible once they turn 18. The bill was passed without much fanfare at the last minute before the legislative session ended, but pass it did, and now it is up to Governor Donald Carcieri to sign it into law.

New Election Method a Success in Takoma Park

On Tuesday, January 30th, Takoma Park used Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) to fill a vacant city council seat in Ward 5. The Takoma Park city council unanimously adopted IRV in 2006 after IRV earned the support of 84% of voters in a November 2005 advisory referendum. Voters appeared to be happy with the change.

On Tuesday, January 30th, Takoma Park will use Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) to fill a vacant city council seat in Ward 5. The Takoma Park city council unanimously adopted IRV in 2006 after IRV earned the support of 84% of voters in a November 2005 advisory referendum. This will be the city's first opportunity to use IRV since the reform was adopted.

Instant runoff voting (IRV) and proportional voting advocates celebrated on November 7th with big wins in Oakland (CA), Pierce County (WA), Davis (CA), and Minneapolis (MN), and held hope that the victories will add to the growing national movement for spoiler-free elections, fair representation, and greater government accountability. These wins all shared terrific grassroots campaign organizations and backing from the main local newspapers and the League of Women Voters.
