The vast majority of elections in the United States are carried out under various forms of winner-take-all systems. Unfortunately, these systems are flawed: frequently producing distorted and undemocratic results; promoting partisanship, apathy, and malpractice; favoring established interests over diverse voices; and underrepresenting minorities, women, and third parties. Here, our flawed status-quo is dissected, pointing up its many problems, and a solution is presented: choice voting. The systemic problems inherent in winner-take-all-systems will not be solved by cosmetic reform, only a fundamental change that embraces America's democratic ideals will succeed.
