Hollywood meets election reform as FairVote launches a new blog focused on the Academy Awards' new instant runoff voting system for Best Picture. "Oscar Votes 1-2-3" (http://oscarvotes123.com) is the nation's primary website to analyze the Oscars from the perspective of its newly-adopted preferential voting system for Best Picture. The site will also have information about the similar "choice voting" system of preferential voting used for decades for most Oscar nominations.

Port Chester will use an at-large cumulative voting system to elect its trustees in 2010: “I think that all parties worked very well and very hard together to come up with a novel approach to a cumulative voting program,” said Randolph McLaughlin . . . a Pace University Law School professor. “The voter education program we put together is a model for the rest of the country.”

November 3rd highlighted controversies about multi-candidate races and non-majority winners in key races for governor in New Jersey and U.S. House in New York, drawing high-profile attention to instant runoff voting (IRV) as a solution, including in a widely-published oped by FairVote board member John B. Anderson and my comments on The Hill's "Big Question". The elections also brought direct advances for IRV, although with disappointments as well.

Amendment 3 to the Pierce county charter is an attempt by incumbent politicians to rig the system and prevent any serious challengers from competing. IRV is simply too fair and too democratic to not keep using in our electoral system. -
